Defender, Range Rover, and Discovery vehicles are packed with convenience features to make driving stress-free in Del Mar and Rancho Santa Fe. Your key fob is just one of those features. If your key is low on battery, your instrument panel will notify you with a “SMART KEY BATTERY LOW” message. Not sure how to replace a key fob battery? That’s ok! Fortunately, it is a pretty simple task that can be performed right at home. Learn how to open the key fob and more in this handy guide.
Your key fob will need a CR2032-type battery. You can find one at any La Jolla-area hardware store. When you have the right battery, you can learn how to open a key fob with the steps below.
Release the Key: To have access to the key fob battery, you have to learn how to open the key fob. Locate the small black button, press the button, and access the metal emergency key blade from the plastic box. Some models have a key with a slideable key.
Open the Key Fob: To open the box, you can use the key blade or a small screwdriver.
Replace the Key Fob Battery: Use a tiny screwdriver to remove the battery. Put the new battery in place with the positive (+) side up. Try not to touch the new battery. Moisture and oil from your fingers can corrode the battery over time.
Put the Key Back Together: Close the key fob case, and you are all set!
How to Care for Your Key
Your smart key is an extremely useful tool, but proper care is a must.
Heat and Sun Damage: Extreme heat and direct sunlight can damage your key, so be careful where you leave it.
Other Radio Frequencies: Devices like medical equipment may use a radio frequency that interferes with the performance of your smart key.
Replace All Batteries at Once: When you get the warning message that it is time to change the battery in your key fob, be sure to change the battery in all key fobs for your vehicle.
