Defining PHEV and MHEV

Before we get into the Land Rover PHEV and MHEV lineup, let’s answer some basic questions – What does PHEV stand for? What does MHEV stand for?

PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. These vehicles run simultaneously on electric power and gasoline, drawing power from a large electric motor and a traditional internal combustion engine. Due to the size of the battery, PHEVs can cruise short distances entirely on electric power, which means you can often go up to 50 miles without ever spending a drop of gasoline! This leads to significant long-term fuel savings as well as performance enhancements.

MHEV stands for Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle. They also make use of electric power, but more as a support system for the gasoline engine. The motor is much smaller than a PHEV, which means you’ll still enjoy improved efficiency, but you’ll never have to plug the vehicle in to recharge! MHEVs maximize your fuel efficiency on the Rancho Santa Fe roads with systems like regenerative braking and deceleration.

Land Rover currently offers seven hybrid vehicles–two PHEV and five MHEV models–as well as an upcoming fully-electric Range Rover which will be available for pre-order later this year! Here’s a quick overview of each vehicle:

• Range Rover Sport Electric Hybrid / EV range: 51 miles / 434 horsepower / 457 lb-ft of torque

Land Rover MHEV Models

• Range Rover MHEV / 394 horsepower / 369 lb-ft of torque

• Range Rover Sport MHEV / Up to 434 horsepower / Up to 406 lb-ft of torque

• Range Rover Velar MHEV / 395 horsepower / 406 lb-ft of torque

• Discovery MHEV / 355 horsepower / 368 lb-ft of torque

• Defender MHEV / 395 horsepower / 406 lb-ft of torque
